Indie Author Summer Extravaganza Feature Friday: Emily Wright

In celebration of this year’s Indie Author Summer Extravaganza (14 July - 17 July & hosted by Hayley Anderton), I’m featuring fellow participating romance authors every Friday! This event has over 80 authors so far and is a great way for readers to find new indie books & authors in a variety of genres!

Emily Wright is a dog-loving, book-sniffing, ukulele-playing author who lives in Sheffield in the UK. When she isn’t attached to her computer writing, she loves the outdoors, especially the crash of the ocean, the smell of pine, and starry night skies that make her feel absolutely obsolete. When not drinking tea and eating an unthinkable amount of Bourbons, she spends the rest of her time chasing her two naughty Cocker Spaniels around the house to stop them from eating anything and everything.

Emily Wright Author Interview

How do you find time to write?

I get up super early to try and get some words in before work, and then I fit in an extra hour after I finish work too. Plus weekends and quieter work days where I can get away with it, but I think I’m always writing bits in my head no matter what I’m doing. I’m always thinking about my characters and what they’re doing!

How long does it take you to write a book?

I’m aiming to be able to write full time in two years. Quite ambitious, but having a big goal really motivates me! At the moment, I’m aiming for a new book every six months, but ideally I want to write three or four a year! I have so many ideas, just not enough time to write!

Does writing energize you or exhaust you?

Definitely energise! Writing is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and when a story starts to take place in my head, all I can do is think about it until I get it out on the page. If I don’t write, I feel terrible. It’s like someone’s sucked the life out of me. When I write and it’s going well, nothing could knock me down.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Unfortunately, yes! Writer’s block is horrible! Spending time outside and going for drives listening to music helps shift it for me sometimes!

What’s your favorite under- appreciated novel?

Oooh, I would say ‘Afterlove’ by Tanya Byrne. This book destroyed me. It’s forever known as “the cry book” to me because of what a mess it left me in. SO powerful. So beautiful. And so bittersweet. If bittersweet is your jam, you’re gonna want to read that one. I rarely see it spoken about, but it should be!

If you could tell your younger writer self anything, what would it be?

To stop delaying and write those stories that you want to write! Growing up gay in a small town, I struggled to relate to a lot of fiction I read growing up. I put it off for so long while I was coming to terms with my sexuality. I think if I’d been able to read about more characters like myself, my coming out process would’ve been a lot smoother. I hope to be able to write those stories for others that I so desperately needed.
