Indie Author Summer Extravaganza Feature Friday: Kristina Carmela

In celebration of this year’s Indie Author Summer Extravaganza (14 July - 17 July & hosted by Hayley Anderton), I’m featuring fellow participating romance authors every Friday! This event has over 80 authors so far and is a great way for readers to find new indie books & authors in a variety of genres!

Being creative has always come naturally to me. I’ve gravitated toward creating or challenging myself by making something new. It probably all started as a kid who loved to write songs, I had no musical talent at all, but songwriting was a unique way to express what was happening in my busy mind. Over the years, I have taught myself to sew, paint and probably tackle every kind of DIY project imaginable. But writing a book has always been the one thing that scared me!

Until now!

Writing this first book has given me such a sense of accomplishment and joy! While some of Georgia’s story might be hard to relate to, I hope many people can see themselves in the woman who is finding her way, just as I can.

Kristina Carmela Author Interview

How do you find time to write?

I’ve made writing a little ritual! Every night, I try to write something! Even if it’s just a sentence or two. Making it a part of my routine has helped me stay engaged with everything going on in my books!

How long does it take you to write a book?

I’ve been on a cycle where writing a first draft takes me about 3 months give or take, then editing takes me another 3-4 months!

Does writing energize you or exhaust you?

Both! When I’m on a roll with a great idea or if my mind takes me in a direction I wasn’t expecting, I feel so empowered! But I do forget that it’s ok to take a break with writing or breaks between drafts. Sometimes I can feel the burnout, but I try not to be proactive & give myself some grace to recharge.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Absolutely! When I get into a place where I can’t write at all, I like to go backwards. I’ll spend time re-reading what I’ve already written to get inspired or maybe find a way to add to something already. Sometimes that’ll spark something in me!

Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

Yes! Reading slumps are so hard to get out of for me! I’ll start several books just to try to finish one. Most of the time, it doesn’t have anything to do with the writing or the story, it’s all me!

What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?

My full time job! Kidding! Kind of.

If you could tell your younger writer self anything, what would it be? Your ideas matter & your words can make a difference. Sharing them doesn’t have to be so scary.
