"I like this." She shifted in her seat and looked around the restaurant's courtyard. It was dusk, a few days from the first of June. A canopy of Edison lights blanketed the space in a soft glow while the Iowa river rolled beyond, in all her brown, panoramic, temperamental glory. The air felt sticky and held a distinct damp, earthy smell. A flash of purple lightning in the distance suggested a storm was approaching.
They ordered drinks as well as an appetizer of something with bread. She kept shifting in her seat. A Jolie-ism he still recalled during their time apart. She was on edge.
"I'm trying not to freak out," she said. Her lips shaped her words more so than her voice.
Jace captured her hand on instinct and moved his chair closer to hers. "I noticed. It's just me," he said, moving his thumb over the pulse on her wrist. Thump thump thump.
She blew out a strangled laugh. "I'll get it together. Once you distract me— How does it feel to be done?"
